ADVICE FOR ALL CUSTOMERS BUYING KOI

initial acclimatisation

Try to make the transfer of the fish from the environment it is leaving to its new set of conditions as gradual as possible. Float the koi transport bag until the water temperature is identicle in both the bag and the quarantine tank/pond. This period will vary from around 10 minutes in warm weather to a maximum of half an hour in cooler conditions. Do not leave fish unattended in the bag on a hot day, as the level of dissolved oxygen in the water will drop more quickly. Hobbyists wishing to take every precaution against stressing thier new koi should check for any variation between the pH of the water in the bag and tank, this is more lickly after a long journey. This can be adjusted by gradually introducing small amounts of the tank/pond water into the bag allowing the fish to adjust for a few minutes each time before release when the pH is identicle. When releasing koi do not allow any of the water in the bag to enter the tank/pond.

full acclimatisation

acclimatisation is the biological process by which koi adapt to each new envioroment they live in no matter how temporary. Therefore, your dealer cannot complete this process for any fish no matter how long they quarantine .The journey to thier final home and the new envioroment can create  stress that may trigger a health problem. All dealers are premises are cross infective no matter how high the dealers standards. The hobbyist appreciating that a stressed fish poses a risks should quarantine all new koi for at least a month, three months being a safer period. koi can be subjected to a gradual rise in temperature during quarantine but avoid temperatures over 68F.

WHAT IS QUARANTINE?

Primarily, quarantine is the isolation of koi who are stressed by importation, transportation and life in the more crowded envioroment of the dealers premises. Stress is one of the mechanisms that can trigger disease carried without any outward sign.Secondly, stressed koi are themselves susceptable to infection and are more lickly to contract a health problem. Quarantine is not foolproof but it minimises the risk of a health problem ultimately affecting your existing koi.

The quarantine tank

the size of a quarantine tank depends on the size of koi that you buy and the number of koi you will isolate at any one time, but too small a tank will increase stress levels. Your koi benefit from living in as large a water volume as possible and this applies to quarantine as well. The filtration system on the quarantine tank needs monitoring as due to the fluctuating stocking levels in the tank it may not remain biologically sound soboosting the filter with bacteria regularly may be neccessary. For this same reason regular water testing is vital and must not be over looked. All water parameters require constant checking and the tank must be maintained hygenically as fish waste increases the risk of health problems. If you provide a companion fish, this should ideally be from your existing stocks as a health problem in your companion fish could indicate that your new fish is a carrier. When quarantine is over ensure that all the parameters of the pond mirror that of the quarantine tank to minimise further acclimatisation.
